4X31WS wire rope is a high-performance multi-strand wire rope. "4X31" means it is composed of 4 strands, each containing 31 steel wires. "WS" stands for the mixed twisting structure of Siru and Warinton, which combines the advantages of both twisting methods.
It has a compact structure and closely arranged strands. It combines the high strength of Siru and the flexibility of Warinton, and has excellent fatigue resistance and wear resistance. It has high breaking tensile force and good anti-rotation performance, suitable for medium to heavy load scenarios.
It is commonly used in crane luffing mechanisms, elevator traction, port hoisting, etc. It can remain stable under high-frequency bending and continuous load, and is especially suitable for industrial working environments with balanced comprehensive performance requirements.

The characteristics of 4X31WS wire rope focus on structural balance and comprehensive mechanical properties, which are specifically manifested as follows:
Advantages of mixed twisting: It adopts the mixed twisting of Westru-Warrington (WS), and the thick and thin wires are arranged alternately in each of the 31 wires. It not only retains the wear resistance of Westru type (outer layer thick wire), but also improves the filling rate of the strands through the Warrington type (inner layer thin wire). The rope structure is more compact and has strong deformation resistance.
Combining rigidity and flexibility: Compared with pure Westru type wire rope, it has better flexibility and outstanding bending fatigue performance, which is suitable for frequent winding around pulleys and reeling and unwinding; at the same time, the overall strength is high, and the breaking tension can meet the needs of medium to heavy loads.
Anti-rotation and stability: The symmetrical structure of 4 strands effectively reduces the tendency of unidirectional torsion, which can reduce the self-spin of the rope under light loads during hoisting operations. With the close fit between strands, the vibration is small during operation, and the stability is better than that of a loose structure with multiple strands.
Adaptable to multiple wear scenarios: The outer layer of thick steel wire enhances the wear resistance of the contact surface with the pulley, and the inner layer of fine steel wire disperses stress, extending the fatigue life. It can adapt to complex working conditions with both tensile and bending stresses such as crane luffing and elevator traction.
4X31WS wire rope is widely used in industrial scenarios with medium load, high-frequency bending and stretching due to its characteristics of rigidity and flexibility, strong fatigue resistance and adaptability to composite stress:
Lifting machinery: As auxiliary lifting rope and luffing rope of automobile crane and tire crane, its good flexibility adapts to the bending requirements of frequent extension and retraction of the boom and luffing, and its sufficient strength can meet the lifting of small and medium-sized equipment (50-100 tons), such as small and medium-sized steel structure transportation and equipment installation on construction sites.
Elevator and vertical transportation: The traction system used for high-rise building elevators, the WS mixed twisting structure can withstand the bending and stretching composite stress of repeated lifting and lowering of the car, and its fatigue resistance can match the high-frequency use of thousands of starts and stops per day, ensuring smooth operation.
Port and logistics equipment: Adapt to the lifting mechanism of port forklifts and container stackers, the outer thick steel wire is wear-resistant and can cope with frequent friction with the drum, suitable for continuous operations such as short-distance container transportation and cargo loading and unloading.
Construction and municipal engineering: In the cage traction of construction elevators and the load-bearing system of material hoists, its anti-rotation and stability can reduce the shaking of equipment during operation, and is suitable for scenes such as material transportation between floors and lifting of small prefabricated parts.
Mining and metallurgy: Auxiliary traction ropes used for underground hoists and translation mechanisms of metallurgical cranes can withstand medium loads during ore transfer and ladle lifting, and its impact resistance can cope with occasional material impacts.
Q1: Does the WS mixed twist structure of 4X31WS have special requirements for maintenance?
A: Attention should be paid to the cleaning and lubrication penetration between strands: the thick and thin steel wires in the WS structure are arranged alternately, and dust and oil are easily accumulated in the gaps. They need to be cleaned regularly with a high-pressure air gun or a soft brush (to avoid hard brushes damaging the thin steel wires); medium-viscosity penetrating grease is preferred for lubrication to ensure that the contact surface of the thin steel wires is fully covered to prevent local wear acceleration due to uneven lubrication.
Q3: Why does the surface of the rope appear slightly "fluffed" after high-frequency bending operations?
A: This is a normal initial wear performance: when the outer thick steel wire of the WS structure contacts the pulley, the surface oxide layer or plating will fall off slightly due to friction, forming fluffy filaments. If only the surface is fluffed, there is no single wire breakage, and the fluffing range does not exceed 1/3 of the circumference of the rope, it can continue to be used and monitored more strictly; if accompanied by more than 2 single-strand steel wire breakage, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Q3: The 4-strand structure is not as resistant to rotation as the multi-strand structure. How to avoid slight twisting during hoisting?
A: Twist can be reduced by optimizing the operating specifications:
Before hoisting, ensure that the rope body has no pre-twist (keep it drooping naturally when releasing the wire to avoid entanglement);
Maintain a constant speed when lifting heavy objects to avoid inertial twisting caused by sudden stops and starts;
For scenarios with high precision requirements (such as elevator traction), anti-twist devices (such as rotary connectors) can be used to further offset residual torsional forces.
Q6: Is there a difference in service life compared with 6X37 wire ropes of the same diameter?
A: In high-frequency bending scenarios (such as elevator traction and crane luffing), 4X31WS has a longer service life: its WS hybrid structure has a more uniform stress distribution within the strands, less friction between the steel wires during bending, and better fatigue resistance than 6X37; but in pure tensile heavy-load scenarios, the service life of the two is similar, because 6X37 has more strands and a slightly stronger overall tensile deformation resistance.
