8×19S wire rope is a high-strength product with 8-strand Westerly structure, containing 19 steel wires per strand, arranged in "1 center wire + 6 inner wires + 12 outer thick wires" (Westerly "S" feature). The symmetrical twisting of 8 strands greatly reduces torsional stress, and the anti-rotation performance is better than that of 6-strand rope. Its outer thick steel wire has outstanding wear resistance, and with the 8-strand design, the force is more uniform and the breaking tensile force is high (about 15% higher than 6×19S at the same diameter). It is suitable for medium pulley diameters (≥20 times the rope diameter), suitable for medium and heavy lifting, long-distance traction and other scenarios, such as 30-60 ton crane main hooks and mine hoists, taking into account both wear resistance and anti-twist requirements.
Line contacted wire rope(Ungalvanized and Galvanized).
All the wires in the strand have the same lay length. Each layer of wires is placed on the groove formed between the inner wires. The wires are in line contact and the strand structure is tight. Therefore, the line contact wire rope has a large breaking force and there is no secondary bending stress between the layers of wires when in use.
Features: The contact within the strand is tighter than point contact, the density coefficient is higher, the bending and contact stress on the steel wire in the rope is smaller during operation, and the service life is higher than that of general point contact wire rope.

8-strand anti-rotation structure: The 8-strand symmetrical twisting design significantly reduces the rotation torque during operation, and reduces the self-rotation amplitude by more than 50% compared with the 6-strand rope. It is especially suitable for long-distance suspension or multi-turn traction scenarios to avoid the shaking of the hanging objects or the entanglement of the rope body.
Westerly (S) strands are enhanced and wear-resistant: each strand adopts the Westerly arrangement of "1 center wire + 6 inner wires + 12 outer thick wires", and the outer layer is all thick steel wires. The wear resistance is 10%-15% higher than that of the Warinton (WS), which is suitable for working conditions with frequent contact with pulleys.
High breaking force: Under the same diameter, the total steel wire cross-sectional area of the 8-strand structure is larger, and the breaking force is about 15% higher than that of 6×19S, which is suitable for medium and heavy loads of 30-80 tons. The steel core (IWRC) version can withstand higher impact loads.
Even force distribution: 8 strands have more contact points with the drum/pulley, and the pressure per unit area is smaller, which can reduce local stress concentration and extend the service life under multi-layer winding or high-frequency retraction and release conditions.
Moderate flexibility: Although the outer layer of thick steel wire accounts for a high proportion, the 8-strand design makes up for the rigidity and can be adapted to pulleys ≥20 times the rope diameter. The bending performance is better than the 8-strand compacted strand rope of the same specification, taking into account both wear resistance and rope winding flexibility.
8×19S wire rope is suitable for medium and heavy duty, multi-turn or wear and torsion resistance scenes with the characteristics of "8-strand anti-rotation, Westerly wear resistance, and high breaking force". Typical uses include:
Lifting machinery: 30-80 ton truck crane main hook, crawler crane luffing mechanism, especially suitable for long boom conditions, reducing the rotation and shaking of the hanging objects; tower crane hoisting trolley traction rope, resistant to frequent friction with the pulley.
Port operations: lifting ropes for small and medium-sized container quay cranes, grab traction systems for bulk terminal gantry cranes, outer thick steel wires are resistant to seawater corrosion and wear, and the 8-strand structure is suitable for multiple pulley steering.
Mine hoisting: cage hoists for medium and deep mines (hoisting height 500-2000 meters), the steel core (IWRC) version can withstand heavy loads, and the anti-rotation property reduces the torsional stress when the drum is wound.
Engineering traction: traction ropes for large equipment translation (such as bridge support installation), temporary knots for steel structure hoisting, high breaking force suitable for heavy loads, anti-rotation to avoid knotting during traction.
Elevators and ropeways: traction ropes for heavy-duty freight elevators, load-bearing ropes for small and medium-sized passenger ropeways in mountainous areas, taking into account stable operation and wear resistance, and suitable for multi-wheel steering traction systems.
Q1: Can the anti-rotation performance of 8×19S completely eliminate rotation during operation?
A: It cannot be completely eliminated, but it can be significantly reduced.
The 8-strand symmetrical structure can control the rotation amplitude to "≤30° per 10 meters" (about 60° for 6×19S) by offsetting the twisting stress, which is suitable for long-distance suspension (such as crane boom extension) or multi-turn scenarios. If complete anti-rotation is required, a special anti-rotation joint (such as a rotary connector) is required, especially when hoisting slender components (such as steel columns).
Q4: What is the reason for the "splitting" (longitudinal cracks) of the outer thick steel wire?
A: Common causes:
The pulley groove size is too small (<20 times the rope diameter), the outer thick steel wire is over-extruded during bending, and longitudinal cracks are generated on the surface;
The steel wire material is defective (such as uneven heat treatment), or it is subjected to violent impact during use (such as sudden falling objects during hoisting), resulting in stress concentration cracking inside the steel wire.
Treatment: If splitting occurs, it must be scrapped. Such cracks will expand rapidly and may cause the entire strand to break.
Q6: What are the differences in maintenance between 8×19S with fiber core (FC) and steel core (IWRC)?
A: Fiber core (FC): More frequent lubrication is required (once every 2-3 weeks), because the fiber is highly hygroscopic and the core is easily rotten due to moisture; when checking, pay attention to the rope end (the fiber core is easily worn out from the rope head).
Steel core (IWRC): The lubrication cycle can be extended to once a month, but it is necessary to ensure that the grease can penetrate between the strand and the steel core (it can be injected with a pressure nozzle); focus on checking whether the steel core is rusted (if the outer steel wire is damaged, rainwater can easily contact the steel core and cause rust).
