Wire Rope 6x19S is a commonly used multi-strand wire rope structure, which is a modified version of point contact wire rope ("S" stands for Westleigh twist, that is, the outer wire is thicker and the inner wire is thinner, which improves wear resistance). It is widely used in industrial scenarios such as lifting, hoisting, and traction. Common twists are "right alternating twist" (Z twist) or "left alternating twist" (S twist), and the twist pitch is usually 6~8 times the diameter of the wire rope. The overall structure is compact and has medium rigidity. The wire diameter is thicker (compared to 6×37), the single wire strength is high (common strength levels are 1570MPa, 1770MPa, and 1870MPa), and the breaking tension is large (such as 6×19S wire rope with a diameter of 20mm, the breaking tension of 1770MPa is about 290kN).
Suitable for bearing medium and high loads, the safety factor is usually required to be ≥5 (lifting scenario) or ≥6 (traction scenario)
Line contacted wire rope(Ungalvanized and Galvanized).
All the wires in the strand have the same lay length. Each layer of wires is placed on the groove formed between the inner wires. The wires are in line contact and the strand structure is tight. Therefore, the line contact wire rope has a large breaking force and there is no secondary bending stress between the layers of wires when in use.
Features: The contact within the strand is tighter than point contact, the density coefficient is higher, the bending and contact stress on the steel wire in the rope is smaller during operation, and the service life is higher than that of general point contact wire rope.

Strength and carrying capacity
The wire diameter is thicker (compared to 6×37), the single wire strength is high (common strength levels are 1570MPa, 1770MPa, 1870MPa), and the breaking force is large (such as 6×19S wire rope with a diameter of 20mm, the breaking force of 1770MPa is about 290kN).
Suitable for bearing medium and high loads, the safety factor is usually required to be ≥5 (lifting scenario) or ≥6 (traction scenario).
Rigidity and flexibility
Due to the thicker wire and the smaller number of wires in the strand, the overall rigidity is higher and the flexibility is lower than that of 6×37 wire rope.
Bending performance: It needs to match a larger pulley/drum diameter (recommended pulley diameter ≥25 times the rope diameter, such as 20mm rope requires ≥500mm pulley), otherwise it is easy to break the wire due to excessive bending stress.
Wear resistance and fatigue resistance
The outer layer wire has a thick diameter (characteristic of the Xilu structure), and its wear resistance is better than that of 6×37 wire rope, which is suitable for scenes with frequent contact with pulleys and drums (such as crane winches and tower crane hoisting).
Medium fatigue resistance: Compared with 6×37, due to the thicker wire, the fatigue life against repeated bending is longer, but lower than that of compacted strand wire rope.
Impact resistance
The thick wire structure makes it more impact-resistant and is not easy to break due to instantaneous impact force in dynamic loads (such as crane luffing and port hoisting).
Lifting machinery: hoisting ropes of tower cranes, main hoisting ropes of truck cranes, traction ropes of gantry crane trolleys, etc., which need to bear heavy loads and frequently rub against pulleys.
Mining and metallurgy: hoisting equipment in mine hoists (vertical shafts or inclined shafts) and metallurgical workshops, which are suitable for dusty and heavy-load environments.
Ports and freight: lifting and luffing mechanisms of container cranes and quay cranes, which require impact resistance and wear resistance.
Construction and engineering: medium- and high-intensity static or dynamic load scenarios such as large-scale component hoisting (such as steel structures, prefabricated panels), wind ropes (fixed scaffolding or tower cranes), etc.
Q1: How to distinguish 6×19S and 6×19 wire ropes from their appearance?
A: 6×19S: The surface of the strand is flat, the outer wires are closely arranged and the diameter is obviously thicker. There is no obvious depression on the surface of the strand when touched by hand (because the outer wire diameter is consistent and protruding).
6×19 (ordinary type): The surface of the strand has a slight bumpy feeling, and there are fine filling wires between the outer wires. The overall appearance is more "round", but the outer wire diameter is more uniform (no obvious thick and fine stratification).
Q4: Can the two wire ropes be used interchangeably?
A: Short-term emergency: If the load and working conditions are similar (such as a small load reduction), temporary replacement is possible, but long-term mixed use is not recommended.
Situations where replacement is prohibited:
When 6×19S is used in high-wear scenarios (such as tower crane lifting), it cannot be replaced by 6×19 (it is easy to break the wire due to excessive wear);
When 6×19 is used in scenarios that require frequent bending (such as small winches), it cannot be replaced by 6×19S (it is easy to break due to fatigue due to excessive rigidity).
Q6: Which one is more suitable for open air or humid environments?
A: The anti-corrosion performance of both depends mainly on the surface treatment (such as galvanizing, oiling), and has nothing to do with the structure. However, because the outer steel wire of 6×19S is thick and the gap is small, rainwater and impurities are not easy to penetrate into the strand, and the rust speed is slightly slower than 6×19 (the gap between the filling wires is easy to accumulate dirt). It is recommended to give priority to galvanized type (Zn or Zn-Al alloy coating) and apply anti-corrosion grease regularly.
Q3: What differences should be paid attention to during maintenance?
A: 6×19S: Focus on checking the wear of the outer thick steel wire (if the diameter reduction is greater than 10%, it needs to be scrapped) and the broken wire at the contact pulley (due to high rigidity, the wire is easily broken at the bend).
6×19: Pay attention to the wear and shedding of the filler wire (the breakage of the filler wire will cause uneven force on the outer steel wire), as well as the accumulation of dirt in the gap between strands (more frequent cleaning and lubrication are required).
Q4: Are the safety factor requirements of the two the same?
A: Basically the same: the safety factor of the lifting scene is ≥5, the traction scene is ≥6, and the manned scene is ≥9. However, due to the slightly lower breaking tensile force of 6×19, the actual selection needs to be more conservative (for example, under the same load, 6×19 needs to choose a larger diameter).
