Pipe Turnbuckle is a tension adjustment device with seamless steel pipe as the adjustment body. It is widely used for adjusting the tightness of ropes, cables, pull rods, etc. By rotating the tubular body, the distance between the two ends of the connector is changed, thereby accurately controlling the tension of the connected parts.
Its core structure consists of three parts:
Tubular adjustment body: The main body is a high-precision seamless steel pipe (common materials: carbon steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel), and the inner wall is processed with left-handed and right-handed threads, which cooperate with the threaded rods at both ends respectively. When the adjustment body is rotated, the overall length can be shortened or lengthened to achieve tension adjustment.
Connectors at both ends: Depending on the application scenario, the connectors can be matched with different types, the common ones are:
Eye (ring type): a circular closed loop, suitable for connecting hooks, rings, etc.;
Jaw (fork type): a U-shaped fork mouth, connected to the ear plate and the pull rod through a pin, and can swing at a small angle;
Toggle (live joint type): with a universal rotating structure, a large angle compensation range, suitable for dynamic force scenarios;
Hook (hook type): a hook with barbs, quick hooking, but with a low load-bearing capacity.

Balance of high strength and light weight: The torsional resistance of the annular section of the steel pipe is better than that of the solid sleeve of the same specification (20% higher torsional strength), but 30% lighter, which is suitable for scenes that are sensitive to self-weight (such as high-altitude erection and suspension systems).
Strong corrosion resistance: Carbon steel models are usually hot-dip galvanized (zinc layer thickness ≥85μm) and are suitable for outdoor humid environments; stainless steel models (304/316) can withstand salt spray, acid and alkali corrosion, and have a lifespan 5-10 times longer than ordinary cast iron basket screws (especially in marine environments).
Wide range of applications: load-bearing coverage 0.5-100 tons (depending on specifications), safety factor ≥4.0 (industrial standard), can be adapted to a variety of connectors such as wire ropes, chains, and pull rods.
Architecture and Civil Engineering
Building structure support: used for inclined tie bars and curtain wall support systems of steel structure buildings. By adjusting the length of the pipe turnbuckle, the preload of steel components can be accurately controlled to ensure structural stability (for example: the cable tension adjustment of the glass curtain wall of a high-rise office building uses 316 stainless steel Jaw & Jaw type, which is resistant to outdoor wind and rain corrosion).
Bridge and tunnel assistance: In temporary bridge supports and tunnel lining reinforcement, high-strength carbon steel galvanized models (Eye & Eye type) are used to balance the force of the support by fine-tuning the tension to avoid local overload (the load-bearing capacity is usually 10-50 tons, and the safety factor is ≥5.0).
Scaffolding and formwork fixation: The tie system used for large concrete pouring formwork uses the multi-angle compensation capability of the Toggle & Toggle type to adapt to the slight deviation of the formwork installation, and the adjustment accuracy is controlled within 1mm to prevent leakage or deformation.
Transportation and Shipping Industry
Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering:
Tension adjustment of ship anchor chains and cables: 316 stainless steel Hook & Eye type is used, which is resistant to seawater salt spray corrosion (salt spray test ≥5000 hours), and the quick hook design is convenient for quick fixation when docking.
Deck equipment fixation: Such as the lashing system of lifeboats and containers, which uses the Jaw & Jaw type with pin connection to withstand the bumps and vibrations of the ship during navigation. After adjustment, it is locked and prevented from loosening by double nuts.
Vehicles and rail transit:
Cargo fixation of trucks/trailers: Carbon steel galvanized Hook type tubular basket screws are used with steel wire ropes to fix heavy goods such as steel and wood. The adjustment stroke is ≥150mm and is suitable for different cargo sizes.
Rail transit contact network: In the contact wire tension compensation device of the electrified railway, high-precision stainless steel (16 threads per inch) is used to ensure the stability of the contact wire tension (error ≤ 2%) and avoid wear of the train pantograph.
Q1: How to choose the right tubular turnbuckle according to the load-bearing requirements?
A: The working load (WLL, Working Load Limit) needs to be clarified, and the safety factor should be ≥5 when selecting (i.e., breaking load ≥5× working load). For example: for a load-bearing scenario of 10 tons, a model with a breaking load ≥50 tons needs to be selected.
Reference material strength: carbon steel (tensile strength 600-800MPa) is suitable for dry indoors; 304 stainless steel (520-620MPa) is suitable for humid/mildly corrosive environments; 316 stainless steel (515-615MPa) is suitable for highly corrosive environments such as seawater and chemicals.
Pipe diameter and thread specifications: Common pipe diameters are 1/4"-2" (corresponding to thread diameters of 6-50mm). Under the same material, the larger the pipe diameter, the higher the load-bearing capacity (e.g., the WLL of a 1" diameter carbon steel model is about 15 tons, and a 2" diameter can reach 50 tons).
Q5: How do different connector types (Jaw/Jaw, Eye/Eye, Toggle/Toggle) match scenarios?
A: Jaw & Jaw: Suitable for connecting parts with holes (such as ear plates and pins), and the holes need to be precisely aligned. It is often used for steel structures and equipment fixation (for example, ear plate connection of bridge supports).
Eye & Eye: With wire rope and chain, it can rotate 360°, suitable for scenarios that require multi-angle activities (for example, conveyor belt tensioning, billboard hanging).
Toggle & Toggle: With movable joints, it allows ±30° angle deviation, suitable for installation dislocation or dynamic force scenarios (for example, ship cables, scaffolding knots).
