How to Choose the Right Wire Rope Sling

1. Choose the Right Wire Rope

The wire rope is the main load-bearing component of a wire rope sling.

Different rope constructions, such as 6×19 and 6×36, offer different levels of flexibility, abrasion resistance and performance. The rope diameter and breaking strength should be selected according to the required working load.

2. Select the Correct End Termination

The end termination directly affects how the sling connects to the lifting equipment.

Common options include:

  • Soft Eye

  • Hard Eye

  • Thimble Eye

  • Thimble with fitting

For heavy-duty applications, a thimble can provide additional protection and help reduce wear at the eye.

3. Check the Working Load Limit

WLL (Working Load Limit) is one of the most important specifications when selecting a wire rope sling.

The WLL depends on factors such as rope diameter, rope construction, sling configuration, termination and lifting angle. The sling should always be selected based on the actual lifting conditions rather than rope diameter alone.

4. Consider the Fittings

Wire rope slings can be supplied with different fittings according to the application, including shackles, master links and hooks.

The fittings should have suitable capacity and dimensions to ensure proper connection with the lifting equipment.

5. Testing and Quality Control

For lifting applications, reliable quality control is essential.

At Haosail Rigging, wire rope slings can be manufactured according to customer specifications, with production inspection and testing carried out to ensure the finished sling meets the required specifications.
