What is an Eye Bolt? Guide to Lifting Eye Bolts for Rigging Applications

What Is an Eye Bolt?

An eye bolt is a threaded fastener with a circular forged ring head on one end and a full threaded shank on the other. It is designed to connect slings, cables and other rigging components to machinery, steel structures or equipment for lifting and load securing.

The eye bolt in the picture is hot-dipped galvanized forged eye bolt. The integrated forged ring provides high tensile strength, while the long threaded shaft allows flexible installation on different thickness workpieces.

Main Material & Surface Treatment

  • Material: Carbon steel / alloy steel forging. For lifting-grade eye bolts, forged construction is mandatory; cast eye bolts are not allowed for overhead lifting due to hidden cracks risk.

  • Surface finish: Hot dip galvanization is the most popular option. The galvanized coating offers excellent anti-corrosion performance, suitable for outdoor, marine and humid working environments. Electro-galvanized versions are available for indoor light-duty use.

Key Parameters Buyers Should Focus On

  1. Working Load Limit (WLL)Always check the marked WLL on the eye bolt ring. Never exceed the rated working load. The WLL is calculated under straight vertical pull. Side pull will dramatically reduce safe working capacity.

  2. Thread SpecificationCommon thread standards include metric M8, M10, M12, M16, M20 and so on. Confirm thread type and length before ordering. Longer threaded shanks are customized for thick mounting plates.

  3. Forging MarkingQualified lifting eye bolts must carry permanent stampings: grade, WLL, manufacturer logo. Clear marking is required for inspection in EU, Australia and Russian markets.

Critical Safety Tips for Using Eye Bolts

✅ Install the eye bolt fully seated, the shoulder must fit flat against the mounting surface. ✅ Apply only vertical tension. Avoid angular side loading which may break the ring. ✅ Inspect before each use. Stop using if you find cracks, deformation, corrosion or thread damage. ❌ Do NOT use cast eye bolts for overhead lifting.

Application & Market Demand

Forged eye bolts are common rigging hardware for construction sites, mechanical equipment, port cargo handling and trailer lashing. It is a staple item together with shackles, turnbuckles and lifting slings. Many importers purchase eye bolts as matched spare parts with other rigging fittings.

When sourcing eye bolts, buyers shall verify material test certificates and load test reports, especially for orders to Europe, Australia and Russia where lifting safety standards are strictly enforced.
